History Of Clarksville

The city of Clarksville has a long, rich, and proud history. At the end of the American Revolution, the land which now comprises the city was designated for settlement, at least in part, for the soldiers who fought in the Continental Army. These plots were made available, as repayment for their service in the War of Independence, to the families of eligible soldiers. Named in 1784 for General George Rogers Clark, the Revolutionary War hero whose younger brother William led the famous Lewis and Clark expedition, and officially founded in December of 1785, the town of Clarksville was formed even before the statehood of Tennessee in 1796.

As Clarksville continued to grow, so did its military heritage, with residents contributing in every major American conflict to date. This bond was further strengthened by the construction of neighboring Fort Campbell in 1941, just prior to the United States entry into World War II.

Clarksville also saw the establishment of Austin Peay State University in 1927. This, along with wide-ranging improvements in transportation and the formation of Fort Campbell, led to impressive growth in both population and economic prosperity. To this day, Clarksville remains one of the fastest growing cities in Tennessee.
